Virus Bulletin VB100 Awards – December 2012

Virus Bulletin has released  the results of  their latest VB100 testing.  Many, but not all of the products tested were 2013 versions.    Symantec, Avira, Webroot (this makes one year) and Trend Micro (several years for Trend) were not part of the test.  Sophos, Kaspersky, Avast, AVG Technologies, and ESET were.

About a third of the products tested failed to receive a VB100 award this time.  A cone of shame to the following –  BeyondTrust, Commtouch, ESTsoft, FileMedic (formerly MKS) Filseclab, K7 Computing, Norman, Roboscan, Total Defense Consumer, VIRUSfighter Pro, and Zeobit.

A summary of the full  results is at the link below. Congratulations to those receiving the VB100.   You can  buy the full test results or subscribe to Virus Bulletin to obtain them.

Results from this should be looked at in conjunction with tests from other test groups such as www.av-test.org    and www.av-comparatives.org .  In addition,   it’s not how the company has performed on the VB100 test over years.  It’s only the last couple of years that are relevant.   When looking at a company’s award page, verify which product was tested.

VB100 Test Methodology

The purpose of the VB100 comparative is to provide insight into the relative performance of the solutions taking part in the tests, covering as wide a range of areas as possible within the limitations of time and available resources.  More details are available at

Virus Bulletin VB100 Awards – August 2012

Virus Bulletin has released their latest VB100 awards results for August.  Fifty-one participants were tested.  The test was done on Windows 7.  This could be the last time the test is done on this platform?  The previous  test was done on Windows Server 2008.   Given the timing of this test, products used were essentially 2012 versions. As has been the case for several years, Symantec and Trend Micro were not part of the test. PC Tools, owned by Symantec, was.

About a third of the products tested failed to receive a VB100 award this time.   A cone of shame to the following - Agnitum, Central Command, CMC Internet Security, Comodo (interesting), Defenx, eEYE, ESTsoft, Filselab, GFI VIPRE, Ikarus, iolo, Lavasoft (Ad-Aware, the free antivirus version is typically a  CNET download Top 20  favorite), Optent, Quick Heal ,Roboscan,  and VirusBuster.  AVG Technologies, Commtouch, and TrustPort redeemed themselves from the last test.

A summary of the results is at the link below.  You can   buy the full test results or subscribe to Virus Bulletin for the full results, as well.

Virus Bulletin VB100 Awards – June 2012

Virus Bulletin has released their latest VB100 awards results for June.  Just under forty participants were tested.   The test was done on Windows Server 2008.  The previous test was done on Windows XP.

There were only a handful   of companies whose tested product failed to receive a VB100 award, AVG Technologies, Bkis, Commtouch, and TrustPort.

A summary of the results is  at the link below.  You can   buy the full test results or subscribe to Virus Bulletin for the full results, as well.

Virus Bulletin VB100 Awards - April 2012

Virus Bulletin has released their latest VB100 awards results for April.  Many more participants this time, since the test was done on Windows XP.  The last test was done on Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

Not too much excitement.  Some “biggies” failed to receive a VB100 this go around.  F-Secure and Sophos both failed to receive a VB100 award. TrustPort, who typically does well, on Virus Bulletin’s RAP test, failed as well. Trend Micro has been a no show for years.   Symantec Norton has been a no show for the last several tests.  The usual freemium suspects, including Symantec’s PC Tools subsidiary, all participated.

Results from this should be looked at in conjunction with tests from other test groups such as www.av-test.org and www.av-comparatives.org .  Also, keep in mind it’s not how the company has performed on the VB100 test over years, it’s only the last couple of years that are relevant.

Virus Bulletin February VB100 Awards - 2012

Virus Bulletin has released their latest VB100 awards results. Only about a dozen companies were in the test. The tests were done on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, hence the smaller number of participants. McAfee, Symantec, and Trend Micro didn’t have products in the text. Products not passing were from Kaspersky (this is an incentive to get you to visit the site to see who passed!). Bravilna to those who received a VB100 award! Hint, three of the vendors begin with an A.
